Introduction

It has come to my attention that many people on the internet are stepping a little too far when advertising their site or forum. It deeply annoys me, so I decided to write a guide on where to advertise, note that it is meant for forums mostly. I really advise all you forum advertisers out there to read this, and then think if you should still advertise that forum.

Where to Advertise

In Advertising Threads This is about the only place where you can advertise without people yelling 'YOU DON'T ADVERTISE HERE!!!!!' to you. Though be warned, most forums have a rule about posting, like a certain amount of posts, or once every few pages. These aren't the best place to advertise though, so be prepared.

Plugboards- One of the better advertising methods, if you ask me. They are simple, and give everybody a fair 'time slot' in advertising. You just give a site's URL and button URL, and post! Most people put limits, like 'Fill it in once every time your site is up' or something like that. The only problem? They are underused.

Where NOT to Advertise

Through Private Messaging- Honestly, I don't know why people even bother. Most of the time, I either delete it, reply, saying 'No' or just report them, making them banned. I don't do it, and I think that nobody should. It's like the junk mail of the Internet. These are more common on 'bigger' forums than 'smaller' forums.

Chatboxes and Guestbook This is also pretty negative. You get same replies, almost nobody visits, and you lose your public reputation. To try to prevent, put those 'decode the message' things, or don't put your guestbook/chatbox in such a noticable place, like a nav bar.
